Obituary For Douglas Orland Falconer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) Orland Falconer, age 77, on July 22, 2024, at the Dartmouth General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was the son of the late Orland and Ethel (Gunn) Falconer. He was predeceased by his sisters Catherine (Rhyno) and Joyce (Crawford); brother Charles Falconer and grandson Justin Duann.

Doug is survived by his brother Peter Falconer, his loving wife Mary; daughters Tracey, Catherine (Billy), Nicole (Scott); his grandchildren Patricia (Adam), Chantal (Eric), Makayla, Alex, Shyann, Natalya; and his great-grandchildren Kaydence, Jace, Alayna and Kian.

Doug was born in New Glasgow and spent his school years in Halifax and St. Margaret’s Bay. In 1968, Doug married the love of his life, Mary, and they began their life together in Lower Sackville. Their home was filled with love where everyone was made to feel welcome, ensuring a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for all who visited.

Besides raising their three beautiful daughters, they also raised their granddaughters Patricia and Chantal as their own. Providing love, guidance, and support throughout the years.

Doug was a father figure to many, including Billy and Charlie, who were like the sons he never had, and his nieces Laura and Lisa, who held a special place in his heart. His warmth and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Doug was deeply loved by Mary’s parents, Allan and Kay Burton, and he cherished their support and presence in his life. Doug had a deep affection for his own parents, and took great joy in caring for his father during his later years.

Doug was a dedicated meat manager for many years at Dominion Store, Cobequid Market and IGA. Later he became an HRM crossing guard, and continued to do this until the end of this school year. He was more than just a crossing guard; he was a friendly face and a reassuring presence every morning. His commitment to his job and the well-being of the children he watched over made him a cherished figure in the neighbourhood.

Doug was also a member of the Lions Club for over 40 years, where he organized Canada Day parades, Sunday suppers, and managed bingo on Tuesday nights.

He enjoyed golfing with his sons-in-law, Adam, Eric and Scott, as well as his family and friends. When he was young, he spent his summers on Prince Edward Island and a life-long love of the Island began. His time spent there with his family over the years were some of his most cherished moments.

Some of Doug’s favourite traditions were hosting Christmas Eve parties for family and friends, and cooking holiday dinners for his loved ones. He was known for his famous spaghetti, and for making sure everyone's plate was full before his own.

Doug had many friends and was kind to everyone he met. He was one of the rare special people that never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 30th, at 11 a.m. at the Lions Club in Lower Sackville, followed by a burial at Oakridge Memorial Gardens Middle Sackville at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to SPCA in memory of Doug’s generous spirit and community involvement, and love for animals.

    We were lucky enough to meet Doug last year when my daughter started preprimary at Bedford South. Doug was a special soul and made my family's walks to and from school extra special. My 6 year old daughter and 3 year old twin boys would rush out the door to "make sure we don't miss Doug". My 3 year old twins called him Dougie and would call for him wayyy up the street before we got close and continue yelling bye to him long after we passed! Doug always greeted us with the warmest smile and would ask all three of my kids how their day was (even when cars were waiting haha) and my kids would take an exceptionally long time to explain their days! My kids also loved seeing him feed the crows cheesies out his car window while waiting for the cross walkers to arrive! He holds such a special place in our hearts and will be truly missed, especially in September. He will absolutely never be forgotten. He had such a profound impact on our Papermill community. I feel so lucky my children and I got to receive his big smiles and his "so how's your day going?" connections that meant so much to us ❤️ Sending love and condolences to all of Doug's family.

    Doug was our neighbourhood crossing guard here in Bedford. He was the sweetest man and kept our children safe to and from school. He always had a smile or a wave and we always loved our small talk. We got a puppy a little over two years ago and boy....our puppy Charlie (now a 100 pound Bernedoodle) loved Doug. As soon as we got anywhere near that intersection Charlie practically dragged us to Doug......who always had a treat for him. Our family extends our deepest sympathy to your family. Doug was a wonderful, sweet soul who brightened our lives on a daily basis. He will be missed.

    We met Doug during our early AM walks with our beloved German Shepherd Nyla. She adored him at first sight and he'd always have a treat for her. He was a remarkably gentle soul- you could see that shine with his conversation and interactions with the children he guided and parents, walkers and pups that all had the immense pleasure to meet Doug. Our deep condolences to his lovely family, friends and acquaintances. 💞 We actually just got a new puppy this past week and every time we walk down our street to the corner where he was posted, we'll think of Doug and how much love he shared. How proud he was of his role in keeping the children safe in a very busy traffic zone. Rest in peace, Doug. We will forever remember you.❤️

    I had the pleasure of not only working the mini games at the Lions Bingo with Doug every Tuesday, but also playing there afterwards. He always had time for a chat. He asked about my grandchildren and shared many stories with me. His family was the most important part of his life. My daughter, Amanda, adored him and he treated her like one of his own. I know he was a larger-than-life presence in all of your lives and he will be sadly missed. May the beautiful memories you have of him help you all through this difficult time 🙏💕
