Obituary For Joyce Everitt

A beloved mother, grandmother, and teacher, Joyce Everitt passed away on February 19th, 2022, at the age of 88.

Joyce was born in Bishop Auckland, Durham, England, to Lily and Percy Chamberlain. Being an active theatre practitioner, field hockey player, and sailor in her youth, Joyce went on to work as a special needs teacher.

In 1958, Joyce married Christopher Everitt, a banker for Barclays. Shortly after, the two relocated to Toronto where they had their daughters, Jane and Sarah.

Living for a brief time in Vancouver, the family spent time exploring the natural beauty of Canada through numerous camping trips.

First developing her rug-hooking talents in 1964, Joyce proved herself to be a skilled and precise artist. After a move to Halifax in 1979, she helped to expand the popularity of the craft in Nova Scotia through establishing the Teachers’ Branch of the Rug Hooking Guild of N.S. For many years she continued teaching and sharing the love of rug hooking, in Halifax and Truro, until macular degeneration eroded her eyesight.

Joyce was also actively involved at the Parish of St. George’s Church in Bible Hill, where she acted as a licensed Lay Reader. In the Truro area, she also ran a small motel with her husband Christopher until just after his death in 1990.

Joyce loved her retreat on the ocean in Walton, especially sharing it with “the boys”, her two beloved grandsons, along with her friends and family.

A tough North English woman to the end, Joyce will long live in the hearts of her two daughters, Jane Everitt (Harry Dort) and Sarah Kuehm (Ken) and her two grandsons Christopher and Nicholas Driscoll.

Jane and Sarah would like to thank Dr. Flynn from QEII palliative care for helping navigate Joyce’s final days, and the girls on the Hummingbird Floor of Sagewood Seniors’ Home for their ongoing love and support through the challenges of the past two years.

Joyce will be buried next to her husband at a family ceremony. Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to C.N.I.B. or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences can be posted at www.donaldkwalker.ca

Our sincere condolences to Jane, Sarah and family. Joyce was my godmother and I called her Auntie Joyce. We have alot of great memories from the time the family lived in Ontario. Spending time in Halifax for Jane's wedding and Dad walking Jane down the aisle. Auntie Joyce was such a warm loving person. Now she and my Mom can have tea together and share wonderful memories. Love from the Kirbys ❤️

Jane, I spotted your mum's obit in the Herald this morning and thought of you and Harry and how I had enjoyed working with you at CEC. I thought of your cheerfulness and your and Harry's generous spirits. I never met your mum, but I'm sure she would have been proud of you and your partner. I grow and plant some trees every year ... oaks and nut trees mainly ... and will be thinking of you and Harry and your mum when I start seeding and planting this year. Best. - Tony Phillips

Dear Sarah and Jane, On behalf of the Street family, I want to express our sincere and heartfelt condolences on the loss of your dear Mum. We remember her and your dear Dad so fondly! I always enjoyed visiting your home on Briarwood Cres and relished the time we went up to Walton for a weekend at your trailer when we were young teens! Your Mum and Dad were great fun, always taking on new challenges and I know my Grandmother, Helen Street (a fellow rug hooker), always admired your Mum's impeccable and creative rug hooking projects - I still have a few pictures of them from the 80s - so many good memories! Your Mum was a lovely and talented lady and she will be greatly missed...may she always remain close in your hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this difficult time. Take care and know we're thinking of you all... With warmest regards, Sue, Anne & Robert Street (Halifax, NS)

Jane and Sarah, Jake and I are so sorry for your tremendous loss. What a remarkable life your mom lead. From growing up in London in WWII to running a motel in rural NS. She carried on with a full life even after losing your dad. She had so many interests, hobbies and skills. You were both so lucky to have her lead by example. Her love lives on with you both and her two loving grandsons. Rest In Peace Joyce.

Jane, Sarah, Christopher and Nick we are so sorry for your loss. One conversation I recall having with her was about how she marvelled about Jane and Sarahs' busy lives and the energy you both had to accomplish so much. Her legacy will continue to flourish on in all your lives. Wishing you peace, love and cherished memories. Makiko and Paul

Condolences to you, Joyce's treasured family, at this sad time of loss. And thank you, Joyce, for your expert teaching of the wonderful craft of rug hooking to our group so many years ago at the little, old, one-room schoolhouse in Eastville. Many of us kept on hooking into the years and for some of those years you continued to accompany our creative journey as we met at each other's homes, including yours, every Thursday morning. Your gift of the craft lives on as a few of us continue to hook. Rest in peace, Joyce. Fondly remembering you, Leah Hamilton
