Obituaries

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Michael MacEachern. He passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, NS on August 27th, 2024. Born in Halifax on December 3rd, 1948, he was predeceased by his parents, David and Irene (Girmaldi) MacEachern and his wife and best friend, Johanne. Peter is survived by his son, Christopher (Kendra) and his niece, Shauna (Blair) and many friends.

Throughout his adulthood and even into retirement, Peter was a world traveler. He spent many years living abroad in Pakistan and India where he created many lifelong memories and stories, and its where he earned the nickname, Doc Bombay. Eventually, he realized that it was time to return to Canada and ended up meeting a beautiful French-Canadian woman in a restaurant. Looking back, some would think he was crazy as they were married a short 6 months later even though he couldn’t speak a lick of French. Peter’s love of travelling didn’t stop as due to Johanne’s employment with Air Canada, the two continued to travel the world together creating ever lasting memories.
Peter ended up starting his own sales business and kept it running until he reached retirement. Once retired, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time at Point Pleasant park with his dog, Bika and his winter months with Johanne in Boca De Tomatlan, Mexico. Over his years of travel and adventure, Peter accumulated enough stories to last three lifetimes which would lead one to think that he had been around the world once and met everybody twice. He found joy in getting together for meals with friends and family, where he would share his countless stories with them, more than once.
To Peter, Johanne and Christopher were his world. Often having to travel around the Maritimes weekly for work, Peter rarely missed Christopher’s games or practices and would start work earlier than normal so that he would make it to the rink or the field on time. Peter embodied everything it meant to be a husband, father and friend and his presence was a source of strength and warmth to everyone who knew him and he will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
The family is forever indebted to Honorary Doctors Heather Smiley-Stone and Paul Stone, who’s sacrifice and compassion were unmatched in the care of Peter in his final months. He couldn’t have asked for better friends. The family also wishes to recognize two of Peter’s closest friends, David Reardon and Blair Burke for their continuous visits and friendship over the years. The family is thankful for the kindness and care shown to Peter in his final months by the Nursing staff on 5A at the VG. The family also wishes to recognize Dr. Rajaraman, Dr. Rigby, Jayme from Continuing Care and the nursing staff at the Cancer Clinic.
Plans for a celebration of life will be announced in the near future.
