Obituary For Eva Marie Hayes

HAYES, Eva Marie, passed away at Northwood Halifax, on December 13, 2022 at 90 years of age. Born November 2, 1932 in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, Eva was the daughter of Harry and Blanche (Keith) Hayes. She was predeceased by her brother Donald in 1970. She is survived by foster brother Jackie Cameron (Rita, deceased) and their two daughters, Susan (Vince) Prosper of Fall River, and Gail (daughter Marissa) of Moncton.

Much of Eva’s adult life was spent in the loving company of her best friend Marlene "Mitzi" Johnston (deceased July 6, 2022). Eva was beloved by Mitzi's daughter Karen Johnston-Hutchins (John), who grew up never far from Eva's presence, and thought of Eva as a second mother. Eva took great pride and joy in the lives and accomplishments of Karen's children Sarah and Gregory Hutchins, who loved Eva as a grandmother.

Eva retired in 1991 after devoting 41 years to Public Service with the Department of National Defence (Electrical Division), Canadian Forces Base Halifax, Stadacona. She enjoyed bowling and curling and was made a lifetime member of the CFB Curling Club. She liked to stay apprised of world events and enjoyed watching televised baseball and hockey games. Eva was a lover of music and delighted in the chance to sing along while Mitzi played guitar as they entertained friends and family with their talent and antics. Eva was loyally attached to her home town of Stewiacke and stayed in touch with those friends throughout her lifetime. Anyone who knew Eva will have fond memories of her dry sense of humour, sharp wit and fierce sense of independence.

A special thanks to the dedicated staff of 7-Centre at Northwood Halifax, who made Eva feel cared for and at home. As Eva wished, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. Interment will take place privately at Pine Grove Cemetery in East Stewiacke in the spring.

I always loved visiting with Eva, and in their later years Eva and Mitzi, and hearing all about Karen, Sarah and Gregory and their many accomplishments. She was always so very proud of all of you. She will be forever missed and thought of fondly. My godmother and my friend.
