Obituaries

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow; we share the passing of Mary Joan Fernande (Morrison) Walker. Joan passed away surrounded by the love of her family, on April 19, 2025 in Dartmouth NS, at the age of 89. Born in Field, Ontario, the youngest of 8, Joan was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Florence Morrison, her siblings, son-in-law Graham Hiltz, and by her loving husband of 60 years, John Walker.

A life well lived; Joan started her career as an RN at Sick Kids in Toronto. Raising her children then became her priority and focus for many years. Once everyone was in school, Joan returned to nursing and found her niche in caring for adults with intellectual disabilities. Great relationships were formed here with both staff and residence, many that lasted a lifetime. “Retirement”, which was something foreign to her, gave her and John the opportunity to successfully run The Foley House Inn for many years. Not one to sit for too long, her 2nd attempt at retirement found her seeking many new projects and volunteering with the SPCA to keep busy.

Never shy, Joan had a flair for life. She loved spending time with her family and all their pets. She loved to travel and participate in countless shenanigans with best friends Gary and Stirling Woods. She took pleasure in gardening, swimming, taste testing the meal before it was served, and spending time in Arizona, where many new and lasting friendships were formed. She was never afraid to share her opinion, good or bad, even if you didn’t ask.

Joan will be missed deeply by her children; Ian (Tamara), Cyndi (Jason) and Jennifer (Scott) Gildemeester. Her beloved grandchildren Zachary Walker (Jenn), Jessie Marusova (Pavel), Samuel Walker-Hiltz and Lee Gildemeester. Great grandchildren Sienna Nylund, Audrey and Nori Walker-Hiltz.

Always willing to try something new, Joan faced challenges with fearlessness and purpose. Her strength and guidance will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
