Obituary For Alma McKenna

Alma McKenna passed away peacefully February 15, 2020 at Dartmouth General Hospital. Born November 5, 1931 in Liverpool, England.

Alma was predeceased by her parents, May and Harry, her siblings Annie, Harry, May, Mary and Ena. She is survived by her 2 sons, Paul (Nancy) and Peter (Linda) and her beloved grandchildren, Alexandra (Chris) and Christopher. Alma survived the terrible bombings of the 2nd World War and later told her grand-kids' classmates of her experiences of air raids and surviving in bomb shelters. Alma made it to Pier 21 Halifax with her husband Ian in 1954 with $30.00 between them. They eventually settled in Dartmouth and she was a homemaker taking care of sons Paul and Peter. Alma later started working at Glubes and then at the Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital, which she absolutely loved. Mom was a big supporter of the S.P.C.A., Hope For Wildlife, the W.W.F.(not the wrestling organization) but the World Wildlife Federation. Animals were important to her and she organized a 'food drive' for the SPCA animal shelter within her building. She had a heart of gold.

Alma, though not a sports fan at all, loved watching her beloved England football team (not soccer as she would tell us) on the 'telly' whenever the World Cup came on. Later in life Mom began to travel going back to England, taking bus tours to New England, P.E.I., Cape Breton and a Caribbean cruise. She went with her grandchildren to Disney World twice, which gave the whole family awesome memories and stories that still resonate with us all.

During the last couple of years Mom went on road trips with Paul/Nancy looking for that treasure at yard sales. The thrill of the hunt took us to Port Williams, Chester, Mahone Bay, Hubbards, Lawrencetown, Hantsport and every small town in between. Fish and Chips were always eaten and Mom would rate her dining experiences in her journals and come out with her top 3 list at the end of each summer.

Mom was ever the "English lady", never forgetting her roots. Tea should be served in a 'china cup' with appropriate napkins and a properly set table. Mom was selfless and often prepared meals for the poor and school kids programs to ensure no one went away hungry. Mom/nanny/friend will be greatly missed. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place, as well there will be no funeral, nor Celebration of Life.

In the end, moms words say: "Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little - but not too long, and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me - but let me go" Mom/Nanny will forever be in our hearts.

    As a client at Dartmouth Vet,Alma and I saw each other often(too often,at times.)Alma was such a comforting ,practical presence who saw me through many crises and rejoiced with me during the good times.She certainly was the "English lady"which served her well when there was lack of concern /care by the owner of an animal brought into the clinic.Can recall occasions when she somehow managed to not say what she wished to say(but those of us who knew her were quite aware of what she was thinking.)Alma and I shared a deep love for animals and still think of her every time I'm at the clinic(too often still.)I'm so fortunate to have known her.     Learning to skate on her front lawn in 1965. Getting to know her as a good neighbor but even better person. Seeing her a special friend to my mother. A kind sole to all of my animals she gave special care over many years. No dought a special person and "Woodlawn mom".
