Dorothy Eileen Stewart
Obituary For Dorothy Eileen Stewart
As winter came to a close and spring approached on the horizon, Dorthy Eileen Stewart, 79, Halifax, traveled peacefully into the great beyond. Her passing during the vernal equinox is symbolic as Dorothy’s presence was as encompassing as the spring sun after a long winter.
Originally from Canso, Nova Scotia, Dorothy was born in The Tickle Hazel Hill. She would recall that her first memory was of her grandfather carrying her down over the boulders to get to her first birthday picnic on the beach near her home.
Known as Mom, Grammie, Grandma, Nana, Nanny, and Aunt Dot, to know Dorothy was to know her calling in life was to love and spoil her family. She will be remembered for slipping money or treats to the kids, trips to the Dingle, and her sharp sense of humour. She could read a novel in an evening and always knew the latest celebrity gossip.
Dorothy was a talented artist and always had a project on the go, including tole painting, scrapbooking, handmade cards, and knitting. She loved her medium sized Tim’s with 3 milk, a chocolate cookie, a $2 crossword scratch ticket and listening to Elvis.
Mom and grandmother were her favourite jobs, but she also enjoyed working in the accounting department at the School Board. After retiring, she followed her passion for working with young children and was a nanny and honourary-grandmother to multiple families.
Survived by her loving daughters Wendy (Larry) Grant-Rhindress of Wittenburg, Kimberley Stewart of Stewiacke, Bonnie Joldersma of Stewiacke, Judy (Alan) Prosser of Bedford, her loving companion, Edward Kirby (Belinda and Michael), brother David (Leslie) Snow of Kingston, sisters-in-law Hughette Snow (Comox), Shirley Snow (Halifax), grandchildren Matthew (Emily) Grant, Dustin (Chloe) Joldersma, Emily Joldersma, Jeffery Joldersma, Allison (Jordan) Prosser-Hoyt and Robin (Nicholas) Lalonde, great-grandchildren Shane and Nora, nieces and nephews Michael (Amy) Snow, Suzanne (Luciano) Casanova, Bill (Kelly) Snow, Trevor Russell and Ashley Russell. As well as many great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
Predeceased by parents Henry and Florence (Nickerson) Snow, brothers Henry “Hank”, Victor “Joe”, sister Nancy (Roy) Russell, sons-in-law Malcolm Grant, Dennis Drummond and Peter Baird.
Dorothy was lovingly cared for by all her daughters and spent the last months of her life living with her daughter Bonnie in Stewiacke. A special thanks to the staff at the Victoria Order of Nurses, the First Responders, EHS, the staff from unit 8.2, IMCU and 7.4 at the Halifax Infirmary and the Medical Unit at the Colchester Regional Hospital.
A celebration of life to take place Friday, March 29, 2019, at 11 am at the Sonlife Community Church Hall,152 Windmill Road, Dartmouth. Burial to take place at a later date.
