Obituary For Elizabeth "Betty" Adele Duruty (Churchill)
Duruty,(Churchill) Elizabeth (Betty ) Adele It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Betty on October 23, 2019, at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home after a prolonged illness. Born October 10, 1934 in St. Pierre Miquelon, she was the eldest daughter of the late Charles & Elizabeth (Cheeseman) Duruty. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Daphne (Kevin) Stephen, Halifax: Pamela (Pam) Henley, Halifax; Robert (Bob) Churchill, Calgary and Millicent (Mitzi) Churchill, Halifax; her grandchildren, Lucia and Brooke Stephen, Kevin and Thomas Henley and Andrew (A.J.) and Nicole (Nikki) Churchill and her sisters, Stella Merkle (late Karl), France Ritarose (David), Les Cedres; Christophe Duruty, St. Pierre Miquelon. She was predeceased by her former husband and father of her children, Ray Churchill, her brothers, Charles and Thierry Duruty and her sister, Jenny Duruty. Educated in Newfoundland, Betty‘s career path encompassed the fields of communication, tourism and public relations. For some years, she hosted a popular community television interview show for Halifax Cablevision called Duruty Profile. She interviewed personalities in fields such as business, government, education, law and politics. Her volunteer work included eleven years as a broadcaster for Northwood Broadcasting Club, where she amassed a dedicated group of listeners to her programs. In her early years as a resident at St. Vincent’s, she volunteered as a friendly visitor to new residents to help with the transition from home to a care facility. Betty possessed an indomitable spirit and a wry sense of humour that she showed many times during these past years dealing with declining health. The family wishes to acknowledge the 4th floor staff as well as all departments at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. Your professionalism and kindness will always be remembered. A special thank you to Gisela Steffen for your visits and being a faithful friend. Cremation has taken place as per Betty’s wishes. A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Friday, November 1s at the chapel at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, 2080 Windsor Street, Halifax. A reception will follow. If so desired, donations may be made to The Parkinson’s Society or to a charity of choice. “What we have once enjoyed and deeply loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us” - Helen Keller
