Obituary For Geraldine Devereaux (Whelan)
We, the family, are saddened to announce the passing of our wife/mother/grandmother, Geraldine (Whelan) Devereaux at the age of 71. She passed away in Halifax on July 7th, 2019 with her family by her side.
Geri was an intelligent, selfless and caring woman. She was a lifelong femininst and tireless advocate for women’s equality. She was the matriarch of her family; a loving wife, and a doting grandmother (she was usually found in the company of her grandchildren), a loyal sister, and a true friend. Geri was an avid traveller, a lover of books and relished a good chat about current events over a nice scotch.
Devastated and heartbroken by her loss after 50 years of marriage is her loving husband, Joe. She will be sadly missed by her children: Sarah (Jeff Spares) of Hammonds Plains, Geri-Lynn (Allan O´Driscoll) of Bay Bulls, and John (Nancy) of Bedford, her grandchildren: Nicholas, Emily, Kate, Jane, William, Erin and Faith, who were the light of her life.
Geri will also be dearly missed by her sisters, Iris (Patrick) Dalton of Colliers and Glenda (John) Cabot of Colliers, her aunt Helen (Terry) Boone as well as her close friends, Nancy and Al Green, Elaine Condon and Jocelyn Sirios.
Also leaving to mourn, brothers-in-law James (Florence), Frank (Barbara), Michael (Jean), Greg (Babe), sisters-in-law, Rita Fitzgerald, Teresa (Ray) Marburger, Rosella (Bill) Byrne, and Bernice (Edward) Dalton.
Geri will also be mourned by cherished nieces and nephews, and her numerous relatives and friends, especially those in the women’s community and her book club.
Geri was predeceased by her parents, John Aloysius and Molly Whelan, brothers, Gordon and Aiden, sisters, Georgina and Mary. Also predeceased by her mother-in-law, Sarah and father- in- law, Michael, sister-in-law, Mary Hawco, niece Alexandra Williams and brother-in-law, Emmanuel Devereaux. Her Celebration of Life Visitation will take place on August 2nd, 2019 from 2 to 9 PM at Manuels River Interpretation Centre, Conception Bay South. Funeral mass will occur on August 3rd at St. Edward’s Church, Kelligrews at 10:30 AM. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Cara House in Gander (administration@carahouse.com); it was a project that Geri helped initiate and remained close to her heart. To view the online memorial guest book or to leave a message of condolence, please visit www.donaldkwalker.ca.
