Obituary For Gordon Joseph Roche

Our dear Father Gordon Roche sadly passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at the age of 95 at Dartmouth General Hospital. He was a wonderful father to us and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Gordon was born in Halifax and in his early 20's married the love of his life Jean (McSweeney) and signed up for the Air Force. Dad was transferred to numerous places including France while serving. After he left the Air Force, he worked for Canada Post in Halifax until he retired at 58 years of age. Dad and Mom bought a place in Daytona Beach, Florida and enjoyed many winter months there. Unfortunately, Mom took sick, and life changed a bit for them.

Dad was an avid golfer and joined Brightwood Golf Course and enjoyed many golf games and dancing there. It was one of their favorite places to go especially on Friday nights.

Dad had a few health issues as he aged and sadly had to give up the golfing and dancing but still enjoyed socializing with all his good friends, especially at Mic Mac Mall where all his buddies would meet for tea and coffee in the am. Then Covid hit and everyone had to stop going. Once things opened up Dad needed a little help to get there so his daughter Sharon took him and met his friends. After a while several daughters were showing up with their fathers and we became good friends. Dad was there last Sunday and had a cup of tea.

Gordon is survived by his son Mike (Lisa), daughter Sharon, grandchildren Wendy Nowlan, Nicole (Alex) Sarty, Cory Roche and great granddaughter Emma Grace Sarty.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents Bill and Hattie (Pottie) Roche, his wife Jean, son Gordon Jr. and daughter Lynn and his second wife Marion (Lefond).

The family would like to send a very large thank you to two amazing women, Sandra Bell and Tammy Wing for their ongoing care, support and love for Dad over the past years. Couldn’t have done it without both of them.

The family would also like to thank Veteran Affairs for all the support they gave us.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass and Celebration will be held in the spring. Details to follow

Sharon and Mike - So sorry to hear of Gordon's passing. It's been a long time since the days of "the long streak of misery", but Gordon and I developed a good friendship over those years, with of mutual love of golf and pool. He will be missed by me and his many friends at Brightwood.

Dear Sharon, deepest sympathy on the passing of your dad. Not sure that you will remember me, Gloria Grant, but I am sure you will remember our dad, Walter. We lived across from you in Gorsebrook and then you also lived in Greenwood when my dad moved there. We all remember you and have a little chuckle. You used to knock at the door in Green wood and open the mail Shute and say, "Mr. Grant, you in there?" I can still picture you and all the joy you gave to Dad. Four of us are living on PEI and our brother, Wally, whom we called Brud, lives in Bridgewater. He read your dad's obituary and so I looked it up. If you ever come to PEI would love to see you. My name is now Gloria Arsenault and I am in the phone book. Love from all of our family.

So sorry for your loss. We shared some happy times together with your mom and dad at dinner parties at your house, at Brightwood for steak nights and dinners nearly every Friday. Your love and care for them did not go unnoticed and continued after your mom's passing. Gordie dropped in at our house regularly for some good conversation and a glass of wine. You will miss him greatly. May the days ahead allow you and your loved ones the fondest of memories. With sympathy and love, Claire, Frank and family.

Sharon & Mike, I was saddened to hear of the passing of your Dad. Such a wonderful man. Always enjoyed his company...his humour, and yes, that mischievous twinkle in his eyes....Had the pleasure of many rounds of golf with him & Dad (the two Gordon's), and it was always enjoyed the friendship those two had over their many years. A true "Best Man" to the end. May he now rest in peace with your Mom and all those wonderful Cape Bretoner's and friends that have gone before him. A life truly worthy of celebration. Martin Sampson
