Obituary For Harry Charles Philpitt

Philpitt, Warrant Officer (Ret'd) Harry Charles born in Eastern Passage, NS, travelling abroad throughout his Military career and living most recently on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.

On Friday, September 13, 2024 at the age of 77, far before we were ready, we lost a husband, father, grand father, great grand father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend after a brief illness, following a Stroke he suffered on Sunday, August 18th.

Harry enlisted in the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment of Canada in CFB Gagetown, NB in 1964. He spent many weekends hitchhiking back and forth between Gagetown and his home town of Eastern Passage. In 1967 he married his sweetheart, Linda and they settled in the PMQ's in Gagetown. After the Black Watch was disbanded in 1970, Harry became part of the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment. CFB Gagetown was home until he remustered, becoming a Vehicle Technician with the Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (RCEME, REME, LEME, EME), posted to 4 Service Battalion, Lahr Germany, in 1977 and then in 1978 he went to HQ & Sigs and soon after, promoted to MCpl. In 1981 he was posted to CFS Shelburne, NS where he was promoted to Sgt. In 1984 a move to Base Maintenance, Willow Park in Halifax. Another positing to Lahr, Germany for 1988 & 1989 then back to Halifax as Base Maintenance Supervisor until retiring in 1990. Retirement didn't last long as his enrollment in the Supplementary Ready Reserves wasn't enough for him, so he enlisted again, as a Reservist, spending another 10 years in uniform and receiving his promotion to Warrant Officer. Harry also spent many summers working at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo as Backstage Coordinator.

Harry always wanted to help others. He loved people & animals which had him volunteering with many organizations over the years including Meals on Wheels, the Knights of Columbus, St Philip Neri Catholic Church, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, the Birches and the Atlantic Canadian Dachshund Rescue.

Harry leaves behind his wife Linda of 56 years, daughters Christina & Lynn (David), grandchildren, Ryan (Andrea), Katrina, Gregory (Leah), Kara (Percy), Emma (Corey) and Erica, 18 great- grandchildren with a 19th on the way that he was so happy about, brother William 'Bill', sister Mildred 'Sis' and countless other family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. My condolences to the family of Harry Philpit. I too am ex RCEME and served with Harry in Halifax as a reservist. And I can certainly vouch for his good humour and positive attitude. He was a good soldier. Our careers had similar paths with similar postings. His nephew was a great friend of mine growing up in west Chezzetcook. Arte' et Marte'

πŸ’™πŸ˜’πŸ«ΆπŸ’”πŸ™πŸ’›πŸŒ» With a very delicate, grieving & raw mind and heart, tears pouring down my face, I remember only the happiest of moments with my incredibly special & dear Uncle Harry. As all can attest, there was not a day that went by when he didn't made it his effortless mission to bring a smile to everyone's face. To make them laugh at themselves & life in general, even when things were down. On May 8th this year, I had a strong intuition that I needed to reach out to him. Not long before, I had seen a sign on a store here in London, UK, which read 'Barnardo's Corner' and immediately it brought back memories of how he coined the very 'endearing' & comical nickname, amongst all the other nicknames I have, of Barnardo πŸ™‚ I sent him a note on messenger with the photo and asked him how things were. His reply to start was 'seems I have heard of this place! XOX' then.... 'do you have a month for me to tell about growing old gracefully, LOL?!' He shared a bit about how he was still fixing cars & that 20 yrs ago he said it was time to quit ... and how they were still talking about selling the house after equally as many years, hahah ! He asked if I'd get back out that way any time soon as it 'would be nice to get out for a night on the town' (oh how I would give almost anything to have been able to do so) and that if they sold the house they'd 'only need a place for a few years as time is running out LOL' (joking as Uncle Harry always did)......such poignant & painful words now....but somehow months ago I had felt that I should connect with him....so glad I did as always he made me smile...and little did I know πŸ™ Uncle Harry was almost like a second dad to me whenever I had the privelege to be around him & the family.....between military postings & short trips to Nova Scotia. His huge heart, his deep love & unwavering dedication to family, friends, and animals, as well as clear passion for his work and helping others was unprecedented. His last message to me was a link to this very quirky east coast tale, very classic Harry...https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=j3ZHlOPTdLw&si=fynpvSzBgvCaVcSq -- something that typically wouldn't elicit such emotion.... but today it has me completely heart broken. Uncle Harry - thank you for everything you did, for all the love you gave, for all the laughs, for all the best nonsense!πŸ˜…πŸ’•πŸ˜Œ I wish I could be there to pay my respects and honour you, as you deserve. The best I can do is keep the happy memories close & tell you how much I love you...and how much you will always be so greatly missed! Bonnie aka Barnardo. XoX πŸ’”πŸ«ΆπŸ’™πŸ˜’πŸ˜Ώ

Harry & Linda visited over the holidays. Harry entered with a big smile and a joke even before he sat down. He was funny. I enjoyed their company so much. Linda & I would be having a conversation and Harry would interrupt to say Margaret did you hear the one about and he told the joke. Those were great times I will always cherish. Love you Harry πŸ’™

Harry, always the jokester! When Linda and I were finished our phonecall, a lot of times he'd say, Linda just a minute and take the phone to tell me a joke. He loved family and was always welcoming when we went there, especially at Christmas. He will be missed by many. He's in good company.

I am in shock at the news of Harry's passing. We went through Basic training together in 64. Upon completion we were sent to A Coy 1st Battalion Black Watch. Harry always loved a funny joke or story so I don't think he would mind me telling one. One morning Harry arrived back at the barracks rather under the weather to say just before inspection. We gave him the usual cold shower, dressed him and stood him at attention beside his bed. Needless to say a Lance Corporal charged him with being drunk on duty and the Lance Corporal assigned me as a witness. Later we went on Orders Parade to determine Harry's punishment expect to be at the least 14 days Confined to Barracks which in those days was very harsh. The CO, I. Fraser asked me if Harry was capable of doing his duties that drunken day. One must be able to understand the military way of life. I answered him in this manner, Yes Sir. I. Fraser's remark was Case Dismissed. Many years later we told Fraser what we had done. He responded I know, that's what I wanted to see was Comrades sticking together. I shall miss Harry. Gone to soon. RIP Harry. Stand Easy Our condolences to his family, friends and comrades.

Harry was my sponsor when I was posted to 4 Service Battalion Lahr Germany. He met me when the plane landed with a signed leave pass in his hand and as soon as I changed from uniform to civilian clothes, I was on the train to Amsterdam with a bunch of friends. My sweet friend, I enjoyed all the laughs we shared. I truly loved working with you. RIP Harry, you were one of the good guys.
