Obituary For Helen Margaret Hughes
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, Mother and Grandmother, Helen Hughes, after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Helen passed peacefully on May 19, with her loving and devoted husband Mike, her children and grandchildren by her side.
Helen always had a love of sports. She represented New Brunswick at the first ever Canada Winter Games in Quebec in 1967, and went on to win a medal in Synchronized swimming at the New Brunswick Games two years later, all while studying at UNB. Helen's first career was in education, and was a well loved Phys Ed teacher. Helen stopped teaching when she and Mike had children, but her love of sport didn't stop there. She played ringette for many years, and coached her daughter's team as well. If she wasn't in the rink, playing or coaching, she was in the stands cheering on her son's hockey team. She also loved to ski. Helen was also an avid curler at the Lakeshore Curling Club and was a chartered member.
Once her kids were in school Helen went back to work and started her career at the Dartmouth Regional Library, where she worked for 25 years. Over those 25 years she made life long friendships.
Helen had a great love of travel, and was the best vacation planner there ever was. If she wasn't vacationing with Mike, or her two best travelling buddies, Linda and Mary Ellen, she was planning the next trip. Over the years, they really did travel the world.
Helen lived a life that was so full of love. She was predeceased by her mother, Anne Connor (MacLennan) and is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Mike Hughes, her children, Kevin (Erin Cochrane), Sandy Tober (Jeremy Henderson), Grandchildren, Hayden and Lily Tober, brother John Connor (Linda Sherwood), sister Christine Milner, brother in law Peter Hughes (Julie), sister in law Susan Comstock, and many nieces and nephews.
We'd like to thank all the Doctors, Nurses, and staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital. Thank you to the staff in the Emergency department, the staff of 3 East, and 5 East and West for you kindness and compassion. As well to Dr Ravi and the staff at the cancer clinic.
A gathering for Family and friends will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the care of Donald K. Walker funeral directors. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer society.
