Obituary For Horst (Harry) Kuthe
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Horst (Harry) Kuthe 82. He passed peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on August 7, 2024.
Son of the late Margaret (Decker) and Kurt Kuthe. He was predeceased by his sister Gerda (Richard MacBurnie). He is survived by his loving wife Madeline Dyer, sisters Brigitte (Gunter, deceased) Trzeciak, Ingrid (Joseph “Mr.Clicker”) Mills and Anita. Brothers Wolfgang (Roxanne) Kuthe and Edgar (Juliette) Kuthe. Daughter Jacqueline (David) Tower. Step-children Jennifer Miller, Angela (Doug) Roberts, Danny Miller. Grandchildren Matthew (Shannon) Tower, Thomas (Lexie) Tower, Jacob Dixon, Emily Dixon, Dory Mosher, Samantha Roberts, Anne Mosher, Tristan Roberts, Eve Edwards. Great grandson Liam Tower.
Born in Goslar, Germany, Harry moved to Northern Ontario with his family in the early 50’s. Before settling down in Toronto, he went on an adventure to the northwest territories where he worked in an asbestos mine. Harry met and married his first wife Marion (Rhyno) after a very brief courtship. They had a daughter (Jaqueline), as a family they moved to Truro in 1974. Here is where they bought a small grocery store and he created the first delicatessen in Truro, Harry’s Deli. They ran this as a family for eight years. Harry was a long-time member of the Lions Club, and held the position of King Lion proudly. He was also a member of the Bavarian Society. After leaving Truro, Harry worked at many shops and grocery stores as a butcher. In 1993 Harry met the love of his life Madeline.
Madeline had three teenagers at the time and Harry dauntlessly committed himself to the family. Harry and Madeline moved to Digby and married in 1998. In 2003 they seized an opportunity and moved to Iqaluit where Harry worked as a butcher. They moved back to Dartmouth to enjoy their retirement in 2016.
Harry enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved bringing family and friends together, cooking a meal and having a good time. A special dish his family would look forward to was roladen, a traditional German meal. Harry was quick-witted, and this combined with a raised eyebrow or funny hand gesture would have us laughing. His bright blue eyes and big smile could light up a room. Being a grandfather was what made Harry most proud, seeing his love of cooking and entertaining passed down to his grandchildren was so special to him. For Harry, a trip to a grocery store or market was never just about the food. It was about meeting and getting to know people, everywhere he went he had connections with someone. He will forever be remembered in a million moments in many lives.
The family would like to thank the many nurses and doctors at the Dartmouth General Hospital for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
