Obituary For John T. Clarke

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John T. Clarke, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, who passed away due to complications of Alzheimer’s at the age of 81. Born in Halifax to John and Winifred Clarke, John was an avid badminton player who enjoyed many competitive tournaments. He was also a self-taught, excellent guitar player who loved harmonizing vocals, with music being a significant passion in his life.

In his early years, John spent much of his time at the Police Boys Club and the baseball field, both of which meant so much to him.

John dedicated 35 years of his career to the Halifax Dockyard, where he worked in the electronics department building circuit boards and fixing anything electrical. Later, he joined the safety department, ensuring safety of his fellow workers on the ships and submarines. After retiring in 1995, John continued to pursue his love for travel, enjoying many bus tours and trips down south. He also enjoyed socializing and working out at the Sackville Sports Stadium. John always had a smile on his face and a quick joke, bringing joy to those around him.

A true family man, John adored his two children and grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, five sisters, and a brother. He is survived by his soulmate and wife of almost 60 years, Joan; his children, Rhonda and Lance(Bleeker), Tony and Kelly(Varbeff); and his grandchildren, Jeremy Clarke and Shanyn Bleeker.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at the Kinsman Community Centre, 71 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, on Saturday January 11th from 12 PM to 2 PM.

John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

We were very sad to learn of Johns passing. He and Joan are the best kind of neighbours and have been very good to us and our son Logan over the past ten years of us living next to them. John will be missed. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies. - The Cameron's

In the early 1970's my Dad and several coworkers decided to build their homes through a co-op on Pope Crescent in Lower Sackville. "Johnny" Clarke as my Dad called him, was one of 5 in the co-op. My Dad also worked with John at the Dockyard. I'm sure they had quite a few stories and laughs about times spent at work after 35 years there. I grew up on Pope Crescent with Rhonda and Tony and Joan was one of my pre-school teachers. The Clarke house was a "Block-Parent" house that we neighbourhood kids could always go to if we needed help. It was one of those neighbourhood's where everyone knew each other and our moms and dads would always lend a helping hand to each other. I'm sure we must have had a few backyard corn boils together and us kids would play games in each other's yards and houses. Johnny was always looking out for others on our street. He was a friendly fellow, who always had a joke or a tune to share. I ended up buying my parents home as they passed on and I was so happy to know that some of my good neighbours were still there with me. We always had a special neighbourhood and it was the people and families that made it special. Johnny Clarke was one of those people and he and his family will always be part of the Pope Crescent family. I will miss John; his twinkling eyes and big smile that he used to greet everyone with may be gone from here but his legacy lives on through his family. Huge hugs and condolences to you all from the Lutes family (Laurelea & Joel DeAngelo, Nancy Cassidy & family, Peter & family, Deb & Vic Cormier). Our hearts are with you all.
