Obituary For Leo Joseph Barthelotte
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Léo Barthelotte.
Léo was born in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. He was the eldest son of the late William Barthelotte and Clémentine (Theriault) Barthelotte.
Léo was raised in Eel River Crossing, NB. He completed his trade as a barber in nearby Bathurst, then arrived in Halifax by train in the late 1960’s. He started his career as Halifax’s first hair stylist at the Golden Clipper. As a Francophone immersed in an Anglophone city, he quickly developed his English-speaking skills with his co-workers, clients and friends.
Léo, with his business partner and dear friend, Cliff MacKay opened their own hairstyling / barber shop, Kings Krown. Léo was happiest standing behind his shop chair cutting the hair of all whom he considered dear friends. His loyal clientele followed him for over half a century. Léo loved music, movies and good food. He had a passion for life, chocolate and anything or anyone sweet!
Léo always looked forward to his trips back home to Eel River Crossing, New Brunswick, where all his siblings reside. He cherished long drives in his BMW convertible, as it provided him with the joy of driving, with the breeze blowing through his hair while listening to his favorite music.
Léo was a master swimmer and pool player. He was one of the first Polar Bear Dip participants in Halifax. He studied Martial Arts and participated in the art of Tia Chi under the recommendation of his dear friend Art Lloyd. During recent years, Léo was a soldier in the Salvation Army, Westville, NS. He shared fellowship and spiritual shepherding, and developed a closer relationship with Jesus. Léo was a devoted husband to his wife of forty years, Sue. They resided in Halifax until this past year, when they moved to MacLellan’s Brook, Pictou County to share a new home in the countryside. Over the years, he enjoyed his fury companions with dogs Lady, Fox, Neige, and Lady Lily; his cats Snowball, Pussilla and Paul.
He is survived by his loving wife Sue (Rossiter), children: Jay Barthelotte (wife Jean) and André Barthelotte (partner Tammy), step daughter Jill McQuinn (husband Scott),his siblings Gisèle, Claude, Eugène (wife Rina), Roger and Lise (husband Pierre). Leo’s legacy also includes his three beautiful granddaughters: Hallie and Ashlee McQuinn and ‘dancing delight’ Renée Barthelotte. Léo was predeceased by his parents William Barthelotte and Clémentine (Theriault) Barthelotte, sister Claudette, brother Ernest and his former wife and the mother of his sons, Florence (MacNeil) Barthelotte.
Much thanks goes to Dr. Ernest B. Johnson, who was his lifelong physician and friend, providing passionate health care and advice on life.
Léo was a BIG GUY with a huge heart, a gentle touch and deep soul. He was much loved by us all, and will truly be missed.
Until we meet again…
Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, a private family service will held on Friday, October 16th at Salvation Army Citadel Fairview.
In lieu of flowers, donations In Léo’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
