Obituary For Margot Jean Donnelly Walker

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our sister Margot Walker (aged 77) on April 1, 2021after a recent diagnosis of terminal lung cancer. Predeceased by parents W. Gordon Donnelly (1996) and Jane Francis Donnelly (2013) and former husband E. John Walker. Survived by sisters Lin Donnelly Wilson (Tom), Celia Donnelly, and Barbara Donnelly Becksted (Richard) as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Margot was an intrepid traveller who went to Machu Picchu in the 1960s before it became a tourist mecca, Guatemala where she was confronted by armed guerrillas, and Australia which she toured by private jet as a retirement treat to herself. She visited many other countries as well but her favourite place in the world was England where, up until a few years ago, she travelled for a month every fall. She was a complete and besotted Anglophile. Margot was one of the few people in the world from whom you welcomed an invitation to see her travel slides because she edited them so carefully and her commentary was always entertaining and educational.

She was also a highly regarded lacemaker and embroiderer. She attended many lacemaking conferences in England, France and Canada and gave lacemaking demonstrations in Halifax and Dartmouth. She was very grateful for the friendships she made through her lace and needlework groups. We are especially grateful to Josee and Nancy who enabled us to communicate with Margot remotely due to the COVID pandemic.

Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at her request. Private burial at a later date.

    Margot an I met at various stages of our lives starting in shawinigan falls pre kindergarten then Imperial Tobacco, and finally Halifax post retirement. Always a joy to spend time with. I will miss her

    My deepest condolences to Lin, Celia, and Barbara. I knew your sister many years ago as a college friend and sorority sister at McGill. I took my first trip to Europe with her to England, Scotland and Norway . We both left Montreal but have kept in touch every Christmas. She impressed me with her creativity and her excellence at lace making, achieved after she retired.She was always such an independent spirit . We shall all miss her.

    I am so sad to hear of Margot's death. My condolences to all the family and mutual friends. I met Margot in the UK in 2008 ( I think) on the Lady Anne embroidery trip in Northern England and Scotland. Margot's sense of humor was infectious and appreciated. We met up again in the UK in 2015 and together we visited the Stitches and Craft show a couple of days in a row and had a lot of fun. Her embroidery and lace work were exquisite and I was looking forward to see her box of curiosities finished. My husband and I would have loved to come and visit but it was not to be as this Corona took hold. Vale my dear friend.

    Margot was a very special person, one who we loved and respected. Her determination to get Tripadvisor pub meets up and running in London in the mid 2000's led to hundreds of travellers meeting up for the first time and I am sure led to a greater understanding of the world we live in.

    I have known Margot for many years and always admired her beautiful work in lace and embroidery. While in the UK we always tried to meet up, and we stayed with her in the flat in Halifax and a holiday in Nova Scotia in a lovely cottage by the sea. Precious memories. My condolences to all her knew her I know she will really be missed.

    I am happy to say that I met Margot through the lacemaking group. I found Margot was always very helpful to everyone in the group. I am honoured to have met and gotten to know her, she was an amazing woman and I am going to remember her fondly always.

    Margot was my first boss at Imperial Tobacco ltd in Montréal Québec. This was in 1971, I was her secretary in the Library for employees. We were both young. Will remember her as a understanding, sensitive and very patient woman. She taught me a lot, as a beginner in the field. I remember her describing and sharing wonderful time she spent on her trip to Australia. So family and friends please accept my condolences for your lost. I will treasure her memory for ever.
