Obituary For Mary Victoria Colley

Colley, Mary Victoria, Age 98 passed away peacefully in her sleep, September 22, 2022 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in East Preston, N.S. on July 1, 1924. Mom was the daughter of the late Sampson & Ada (Clayton) Williams.

Mom was an active member of the East Preston United Baptist Church for over 80+ years. Mom was an active member of the East Preston Ladies Auxiliary holding the position as the telephone convener, the special treasurer, chairperson of the sick committee, member of the women’s institute of the African Baptist Association of Nova Scotia. As a member of women’s institute mom had the opportunity to travel around to a number of the different churches within the AUBA meeting many people which mom loved. This is where mom got to hold special memories and lasting friendships. Mom was a member of the East Preston Seniors Group also holding the position as the telephone convener. Mom loved being a member of these groups, worked hard and held these positions with high gratitude.

Mom worked as a domestic worker and with Donald Walker Funeral Home, whom mom spoke about fondly and often. Mom years of working outside ended with the decision to become a full time homemaker.

Mom was the Matriarch of our Family and a mother to many. Mom was the last surviving member of her family, (last surviving senior living in her era on Lower Partridge Rv. Road aka Frog Lake Road).

Mom was a devoted wife and excellent mother, (grandmother, great grandmother better known as “Big Momma”) raising her children and has a hand in raising her grandchildren, who meant the world to her and mom (Big momma) meant the world to all of them.

Mom was known as a women of character, a women of all ages; known for her unique sense of humor/ laughter, her jokes, cooking, baking, mom loved to play dominos, dancing, attending her church. Mom was full of wisdom and knowledge to say the least,

Mom loved the outdoors, as a young child mom loved working along -side her grandfather, father and brothers, either by hitching up the horses for market or hitching up the oxen for the wood, chopping wood, planting vegetable gardens or doing whatever her brothers did. Mom always kept her home outside neat, you see mom riding the lawnmower, whipper snipping, and mom was an all-around outdoor person.

Mom got her driving license at the age of 58 and became the driver for many seniors in East Preston. Driving her friends and family members (grandchildren) to their doctor’s appointments, to work or just taking them on errands which meant a lot her, this was her way of giving back. Mom drove up until the golden age of 91, after receiving her hip replacement, this is when mom quietly kept her keys hung up on the key rack being visible to letting her children know that it was their time to take over which they honored.

Mom was a traveler, visiting many places throughout Canada, United States, Caribbean, driving across Canada with her family and friends. Mom always got her point across, but with it came tenderness and compassion, Mom will be sadly and truly missed by all who came into her presence especially her family.

Mom is survived by her daughters, Nola (Dea. Clifford) Thomas, Connie (Vincent) Tolliver, Wendy (Craig) Williams; Sons Freeman, George (Nicole), Donald, Wilbert (Colleen) Eldon (Kim) 37 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, 46 great-great grandchildren, 3 great-great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

George Freeman Colley, daughter Cassie, Son’s Kenneth, Sherman, Raymond; grandson Quentin, Lewis, Ashley, Jalen, Jason, Keezondre’, great-grandson Travis, great-granddaughter Sameeka, granddaughter Felicia, Godchild Arnold, Brothers Regional, Keith, John. Uncertainty in my tear filled eyes Missed opportunities I've dealt with twice My mommy Colley from across the country So far from what I use to know I left everything of mine back home These mountains are not my mountains with my snow It hurts me that you did not see me grow If only I could be half of the women I did not know I'd ask how you became so strong what was your back bone? But save that answer for when we meet again As your granddaughter, it's not if but when My mommy Colley I always loved you RIP Sharma, your granddaughter Amen Deepest heart felt condolences to my Colley family.

Sending my condolences to the family of Mary. It was such a joy being able to take care of her. Everytime I walked in I would say "Hey Big Momma" and she would just shake her head and laughed. I was able to get her ready for her 97th birthday, that was a surprise that I almost ruined (lol) but in all honesty she really was a wonderful woman, inside and out. Mary will forever hold a spot in my heart. May you rest in peace big momma. I'll miss you 💖🕊️

Family may you find comfort in knowing Mrs. Mary Colley has now transitioned to glory and some sweet day we will meet again in that beautiful city. Sincerely, Rev. Wanda Lawrence Revelation 21:1-4 "Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

Pastor Andrea, the Ministerial Team, Deacons, Officers and members of EPUBC wish to express our deepest and heartfelt condolence to the family, friends, and community on the passing of another one of our Matriarchs, Sister Mrs. Mary Colley, aka "Big Momma." We thank God for her legacy as we remember "Big Momma" for her unwavering faith and the genuine love for God that she showed everyone, young and old. Scripture says, in John 14:1-4, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." Please know, family, you are in our thoughts, and we pray for your peace, comfort, strength, and direction as you plan to celebrate a life well-lived. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
