Obituary For Michael (Mickey) J Proude

Michael (Mickey) J. Proude, 83

Passed away in Halifax on May 18, 2020

Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Bernard and Susan (Melvin) Proude .

Mickey was a retired member of the Halifax Longshoremen's Association Local 269 I.L.A.. He served as president of the local for many years and did a term with the Halifax Port Corporation. He spent 2 years in Ontario with the R.C.A.F. before returning to the life he loved as a Stevedore. He was an avid sports fan, loved horse racing, playing cards, pool and was a longtime member of the Brightwood Golf Course. In his younger years he played sports including hockey, baseball and at one time was the top bowler in Nova Scotia.

He is survived by longtime partner Loretta Moore, daughter Debbie, sons Michael and Douglas, step-children Carolyn, Joanne, Deanna, Sharon and Barbara, sister Barbara, Ontario, brother Gregory (Janice), Alberta, grandchildren Sarah, Jami, Stacey and David, nephew and friend Tim Purcell (Keltie), many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and "Sophie".

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Bernard (Bernie), sister Linda Purcell, wife and friend Kay, stepson John Moore and grandaughter, Alicia Proude.

Many thanks to QEII Halifax Infirmary staff of 8.4 and 7.4.

Celebration of Life arrangements will be made at a later date.

    Mickey and I were pals at around 13-14 years of age , living in the Manning Pool . Mickey was a natural athlete and always had a smile on his face. One thing stood out was the time a grocery order arrive for his Mom with a package of Burlington Buns on top and Mickey offered me one and we ended up finishing the whole half dozen . Always wondered what his Mom said . Last time I saw Mickey was on the Halifax Commons on opposite teams . I believe he was catching .This was in the middle sixties . I went on to become a stockbroker on Bay St. in Toronto . So long Mickey it was great to know you .

    I was always enthralled to be in the company of Mickey, he told of bowling in what I perceive to have been its golden age. The characters he would talk about and describe were brought to life and it made you feel as if you were there. Away from the lanes he was a calming, caring man and you always felt that he really paid attention to what you were saying. He personally kept the Men's Provincial BowlingTournament running for many years and it seemed to me took little credit for it, those bowlers who took part owed him a great deal of credit for his working life kept him a very busy man and yet he saw it his way to give back to a game he loved. R I P Mick, one of the all time greats. My heart felt, sincere condolences to Loretta, and all the Family.

    It is with great sadness that I see a good friend and mentor pass away. I spent many hours working together on union business with Mickey in the 80's and the 90's. I think the most valuable thing I learned from Mickey is that no matter what you feud or argue about today, you start tomorrow fresh carrying no baggage from the day before. My condolences to Loretta ,Mike ,Doug and the rest of Mickey's family.

    MICKEY PROUDE

    Sorry to hear about the passing of Mickey. As Paymaster at Halterm for 34 years I had the pleasure of dealing with Bunnie when he was dispatching, Mickey when dispatching and President and member of Halterm's B.W.F., Loretta while working in the I.L.A. office. Mike and Dougie and found all were plesent to deal with. Mickey will always be considered a stalwart member of the Port of Haliifax and will be missed !!

    Loretta and family, So very sad to read this morning of Mickey's passing. I bowled on a number of tournament teams with Mickey in the 70's and 80's and will always have fond memories of those times. He was one heck of a bowler and a competitor but was an even better person. Only person I ever saw that could throw a bowling ball and, at the same time, have a cigarette literally hanging off his lower lip and he would never lose the cigarette. My sincere condolences to you and the family at this difficult time.

    Well Mickey...we know you are not physically here with us but we wanted to express our sincere happiness for the times that we spent with you at Port events over the years.
