Obituary For Phillip Ernest Johnson

Phillip Ernest Johnson, the most precious gift from God, on a glorious sunny afternoon, on July 13th, 2022, at the age of 75, went home to be with the All Above in Heaven. His life on this Earth was as the most loving, gentle and giving soul.

He spent 34 years in the Canadian Coast Guard as an Electronic Technician, eventually becoming a shop steward. He sailed on the the Labrador, John A. MacDonald, and the Louis St. Laurent. He loved working on the many lighthouses all over Maritimes, meeting new people.

In retirement his greatest happiness and treasured time was cycling with the Ramblers and leading hikes with the Volksmarch Club. He volunteered with Cole Harbour Parks & Trails Association as their treasurer and trail warden. He enjoyed singing with the Dartmouth Seniors Choir. He also volunteered with the Circle of Care Society. He could always be found fixing things, in his toolshed, for friends and family.

To the very end of his life, he was a devoted Star Trek fan.

Phillip was predeceased by his parents Douglas Stuart and Martha Christine (nee Greenaway) and eldest brother Christopher. He was also predeceased by his mother-in-law Stella Helena Richard.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rita Marie Johnson, and his treasured sons Darren Stuart (Sue) and Michael Anthony Johnson (Cindy). He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Sarah Emily, Quinn Matthew, Julianne Renee and Taylor Marie Johnson.

Phillip is also survived by his three brothers John (Cheryl), Andy (Debbie), Archie (Pam), his two sisters Kate (David) and Maggie (Allan), and several niece and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

We love you so much. Ride your bike and get into some great debates, my Sweetheart.

I just heard of Phil's passing today, at a retirement event for a former Coast Guard colleague. Phil was one of the nicest people I ever work with. A wealth of knowledge, and always willing to mentor those around. I know he is truly missed by his love ones.

We were very sad to hear about Phil's passing. He was a wonderful, kind and gentle man who always stopped to talk to us when he saw us. We worked with Phil in the CG and were glad to see him again when we retired to Dartmouth. Our chats were numerous. Always a smiling face. So very sorry for your loss Rita, Darren and Mike. The world lost a wonderful light. But he no longer suffers. He is at peace.

We are saddened, surprised to learn of Phil's passing. Quite some years ago now, at a family event held at BIO, he and you, Rita, danced the entire evening; great memory of the two of you. Our condolences to Rita and family. Paul & Cathy Langille

My husband and I knew Phil through the Ramblers. He was a kind-hearted and generous man. When Phil contributed last year to our club's annual "Turkey Challenge" for Feed Nova Scotia, I used Google maps to verify his postal code as I submitted donors' information to the organization for tax purposes. I was delighted to find that Google maps had caught Phil at his car with his bike on the carrying rack -- either heading home from or heading off on yet another fun adventure with like-minded friends (I've added it to the Photo collection). We will carry him in our hearts when and wherever we cycle. Susan Doble and John Fisk

Phil will be dearly missed. He was so kind and full of joy regardless of his personal hardships. He was always a pleasure to cycle and chat with. My deepest condolences

I only knew Phil through the Ramblers bicycle club. It's nice to read the comments from others who knew him in his other lives. He certainly impressed me with his cycling abilities, and as a kind hearted, intelligent man. I will miss him on our bike rides. My condolences to his family.

So sad to hear of Phils passing. Having worked with him and sat across from his cubicle at "TEW" for around 10 years, he kept things interesting to say the least. A lot of really cool conversations, and lots of laughs. So many road trips. Just driving with him was a adventure. Joe Near

My dad was the best. He was without a doubt the kindest man I knew. In the 47 years I knew him never once did I ever hear him bad mouth or say something bad about anybody- except the odd politician.... great story teller, patient beyond belief and loved his family fiercely. A great man, great father and even better grandfather! He loved his bike group and his walking group... honestly one of my fathers favorite past times was showing up the younger folk with his hikes and biking... seriously ask my brother, his kids and my daughter! Lol... a quick funny story ... about 6 or so years ago my brother and his family came down for their annual visit... dad asked Darren, his kids and my daughter to go on a " little hike " ... well .... let's just say that was the last time my father was able talk anyone into his " walks " he damn near killed everyone... and did it with a smile on his face! Dad was just and all around good person, he loved his wife and family mire than anything and I am damn proud to be his son... will miss you greatly dad/papa!

So sorry to hear of Phil's crossing. He was such a care free and relaxed fellow. I shared many trips and hotel stays with Phil over his years with the CCG, and I can say with no doubt we all had respect and good words for this gentleman. So sorry for this loss Rita, and I know his kids and Grandkids will miss his generous heart.
