Obituary For Robert Charles Wentzell

Robert Charles Wentzell September 27, 1939 – March 15, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert on March 15, 2022 at South Shore Regional Hospital. Robert, son of the late Darius and Emma (Garber) Wentzell was born in Baker Settlement.

Until late last year, Robert enjoyed driving around the local area and was recently asked how he managed to drive almost 200,000 kilometres in the last eight years. He just laughed and said he didn’t know, but he always said as long as he could afford gas he would keep moving, and that he did. Following an enjoyable family road trip around Cape Breton many years ago, he simply said that it had been a good trip. Just two words as was his style, but we know how much he enjoyed local and extended road trips. He enjoyed seeing the QEII lottery homes and cottages. He was very interested in checking out the plumbing, hinges, opening drawers and windows, etc. to see the quality of the work versus being impressed by the large bathrooms. He cared about the quality of his carpentry work over more than fifty years. He was not Mike Holmes, but in his way, he always had to make it right. He was always willing to help his sons with any project, big or small, and it was so greatly appreciated. Occasionally some miscalculations and choice words, but we will remember the laughs and time well spent together. He enjoyed many things, a good restaurant meal, a parade, tea and two muffins at Tim Hortons and just chatting with family and friends. He loved his grandson Logan, enjoyed their backyard barbecues and hearing about Logan’s fishing trips. He insisted that $50 for a recently recycled freezer be given to Logan as a $50 bill because he laughed about how much he really liked those pink bills. For Logan, he would surprisingly try things like kicking a soccer ball, shooting a nerf gun and then laugh about it. He once received a traffic ticket for rolling through a stop sign and told the officer he was on his way to the local exhibition. The officer said he was sorry to have ruined his evening. Robert just said that no, not a bit and drove on his way, and that was his way. One of his sons once asked him to inspect a house and from the roadside he refused to get out of the truck. After being asked a few times why he would not help, he simply said that he could see all he needed to see from there. Again that was his way, but of course he was right as the house was in terrible condition, and he wouldn’t have pretended to do a detailed inspection. He was a strong and kind man, loved his family and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife Lucille, sons Brian, David and Rick (Alana), grandson Logan and sister Geraldine. He was predeceased by daughter Deborah, brother Lester, sisters Jean, Hazel and Brian’s partner Caroline.

Donations in Robert’s memory can be made to the SHAID Tree Animal Shelter.

There will be a private interment at a later date in Riverport.

Aunt Lucille, Bub, David, Rick, Alana and Logan. So sorry to hear the sad news. I have a lot of great memories as a child from our family gatherings/reunions. The one I remember well is Uncle Robert riding the bike down the hill by Poppy Veinotte's and going out over the handle bars. Hence the scaring that never left his face. We had a lot of great times together. Never forgotten. ❤
