Sadly, we must say goodbye to our beloved Mother and Gramma, Rose Beauchamp, who left us on May 14, 2024.
Born Rose Patricia Devine, in the small village of Sion Mills, Northern Ireland to parents William Devine and Agnes (Donaghey) Devine. Rose came to Canada in 1949 as the young bride of a young French-Canadian sailor, Raymond Beauchamp.
She travelled to Canada on one of the last Voyages of the Steamship Aquitania and passed through Pier 21 as an Immigrant. She then traveled to Montreal to spend her first few months in a Canadian winter, unfortunately her new husband was posted to sea, leaving her to live with his parents. Picture a young Irish girl who spoke no French, and her parents in law who spoke no English. The climate and culture shocks were enormous. This presented many challenges, but our feisty and spirited Irish lass was determined to succeed in her marriage, and new Canadian life.
When finally settling in Nova Scotia the pair raised their five children. Even with being a mother and wife she began a business fabricating custom made draperies. Her natural talent of sewing, and selling combined with hard work made her business a success. As if that was not enough her husband was struck down with a serious illness, Rose found herself again in a challenging circumstance. Not to be deterred even with three young children at home she turned to a new career, Real Estate. It was a natural fit for her as she loved real estate having already bought and sold many homes and moved many times. In fact, she moved 39 times during 76 years in Canada, we believe she started the “house flipping” craze. She enjoyed a long and profitable career working for John F. Stevens, Clayton Developments and Tom MacFarlane Real Estate. Retirement brought more changes as she and Raymond wintered in Florida for many years, making lots of new friends, happy memories, and yes buying and selling a few houses along the way.
At home in Dartmouth, she and Raymond were members of Saint Thomas More parish for more than 60 years. Religion was a huge part of Rose’s life. Her Rosary Beads gave her great comfort in her last days.
Rose is survived by her daughter Joanne, sons Ron (Judy Millett) and Paul, (Heather Coffen), former daughters-in-law, Sandra Mathies and Debbie Mills. She leaves grandsons John (Christel), Marc (Tali), Nicolas, Sean, (Kerys) Adam (Sarah), and granddaughter Michelle (Mike) Frost. She also leaves 5 beloved great-grandchildren, Rowan, Maisie, Raymond, Leah, and Allie. Also left is her youngest brother, Paul Devine in Ireland.
She also leaves her extended family “by choice” the Goode’s. They have been part of this family longer than any of us can remember and will always be.
Rose was predeceased by her loving husband Raymond, her sons Marc and Patrick, and her three sisters, Molly, Martha, Teresa and four brothers, Francis, William, Jim, and John.
Special thanks to all who helped Rose stay in her own home over the past two years: Colleen Jennings Goode, Leesa Goode, Eileen Bruce, Susan Christen Hackett, Judy Millett and Debbie Mills, You were her angels.
To her best friend Sylvia with whom she spent many hours watching old movies, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, She was mom’s sweetest angel. Mom was lucky to have found such a special friend so late in life. Joanne called Mom every night at 9:00 and every night, Sylvia was there. On their last evening together, they were watching a movie with Charlie Chaplin in it and they were laughing, tormenting each other. Sylvia always gave a kiss on her head before she left. We love you, Sylvia.
There will be a funeral service for her at St. Thomas More (now called Christ the King Parish) at 11 am on Friday May 31, Father Toocluckwu Okafor officiating. Burial at Mount Herman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hospice Halifax, or Margaret’s Kitchen.
