Obituary For Samuel Joseph Oakey
The family of Samuel Joseph Oakey are very sad to announce his passing at the Dartmouth General Hospital on June 27, 2024. Born in 1935, he was the son of the late Vincent and Anita (Nettie) Oakey (MacKay). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Lillian. Surviving are his son Larry (Sheila), daughters Betty (David), and Cindy (Tom), 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren from his first marriage, brother Charlie (Mona), with 3 nephews Gerard (Nancy), John (Linda), and Billy. He was also a great uncle to 3. He also leaves behind his best friend and partner in crime Grace Urquhart, and her loving family who 'adopted' him after Sam and Grace met. Sam and his brother Charlie grew up in various foster homes in N.S. after his mother died when he was just 10 years old and while his father Vincent was in the navy, the best place being in Seaforth as he would always tell us. He says he always loved it there. Sam got a job early on at the Nova Scotia Hospital, working various jobs on its farm (where the Dartmouth General Hospital is now), eventually ending up as a cook in the kitchen until he retired. While there, he would often double as Santa Claus during the holidays for staff children and children staying at the hospital. He loved to golf, bowl, play darts, dance, and spend time with many of his legion buddies. Later, after retirement, he spent lots of time with Grace and her family, going on drives. He and Grace loved to go dancing, apple picking, eating out (loved the Mic Mac Tavern), excursions to Mic Mac Mall, spending holidays in Graces' familys' company, playing his lottery scratch cards and spending time with their two cats, Opie and Oreo. He adored Graces' two granddaughters, Kobi-Grace and Jada Ross and loved to spend time with them when they visited. They adored him as well. He also loved when his grandson Jayden Finbow would visit him. He was especially proud of his grandson Matthew Finbow (Dana) from Sarnia, Ontario and always encouraged him to 'keep drawing'! Matt grew up to be an automotive designer! Although he was only two days away from meeting his great grandson Miles Kenedy Finbow, (they couldn't make it in time), he really enjoyed the video chats he had with them. Service will be held at Donald K Walker funeral home, 11 Akerley Blvd Suite 800 in Dartmouth on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:30 am.
