Obituary For Bernard James Flemming

It is with broken hearts that we share the peaceful passing of our brother Bernie who was the cherished centre of our family. Bernie slipped from us and went to heaven on 3 March, 2025 at the age of 62. He was the beloved son of the late Charles and Charlotte Flemming and he will always be remembered and loved by his sisters, Paula Cogan, Lorna Flemming (John Heseltine) Mary Dexter (Richard) and brother Charles Flemming (Sandra). Bernie was sadly predeceased by his eldest sister, Frances Inglis (Barry). He was blessed to have 8 adoring nieces and nephews and fourteen grand nieces and nephews who share their love for him as well.

Growing up in Halifax, Bernie graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and was an active participant in Special Olympics Nova Scotia programs, competing in swimming and bowling activities. His life was filled with his love of music and playing his fiddle, dancing, watching Home Alone movies, and avidly using his iPhone and iPad. His lifelong passion was playing and owning all things Nintendo and was especially enamored with Super Mario Brothers. But the greatest joy in his life was spending time with family in our homes and accompanying us on adventures. When all dressed up and ready to party, especially at Christmas and on his birthday, his favourite words were “I look great today!”. Bernie was a kind and loving soul, and he always had a kiss and a hug for everyone. His family and friends will never be the same without him.

We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to Highland Community Residential Services in New Glasgow and the overwhelming kindness and care given to Bernie by the staff at MacBeth House and the friends he made there. An extended thank you is given to the staff of Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, for the wonderful care and support given to Bernie and our family. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Bernie’s amazing life will be held at Saraguay House, Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron at 11:30, 9 May 2025.

One of his favourite songs that he sang was You Are My Sunshine. Bernie, you were our sunshine and you will always continue to glow bright in our hearts.

So sorry for your loss. I worked at the group home where Bernie resided in Lantz. Tuesday evenings were Bernies night out and I luckily would take him out. We'd go to my house to swim and he'd play GameCube with my boys. He was a gentle, pleasant soul who'll be missed by many.
