Obituaries

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Douglas Frederick Winburn Conrad who left us on 23 February 2025 at the age of 87.

Douglas was born in June 1937 to Karl Mortimer Conrad and Sadie Gladys (Webb) Conrad in Saint John New Brunswick.

After graduating from Saint John Vocational School in 1955 with a Second Class Certificate of Proficiency in Radio, Doug went to sea as a Radio Officer and travelled the world, eventually settling down in Halifax Nova Scotia and working for the Canadian Coast Guard as a Radio Operator and Marine Communications and Traffic Services Officer, retiring in 1998. After retirement Doug worked part time as a Pilot Dispatcher for the Atlantic Pilotage Authority for many years.

Doug enjoyed trains and photography and spent many hours enjoying his favourite pastime - chasing and photographing trains, often having his pictures published in Train Magazines. Doug spent many retirement evenings with his buddies drinking coffee, shooting the breeze and watching the trains passing by the area of Birch Cove overlooking Bedford Basin.

Doug was pre deceased by his parents, his first wife Stephanie Lynn (Brown) and their son Karl Aaron Conrad and his second wife Dorothee Elisabeth (Junghans). Doug is survived by his Daughter-in-Law Jane Conrad, grandchildren Soren Kayze Vogel (Alex), Lacey Jazmine Conrad, Colton Taz Conrad (Meredith) and great grandchildren Zander Rice Conrad and Shepherd Treat Conrad.

There will be no funeral as per Doug’s wishes. Doug and Dorothee will be buried at Fernhill Cemetery in Saint John NB with his parents.

A special thank you to the staff at Melville Lodge Long Term Care Facility in Halifax for taking care of Doug for the last three and a half years. We greatly appreciate all that you do for our loved ones in your care.
