Obituary For Marilyn Margaret Antle (Brown)
Antle, Marilyn Margaret (Brown) – age 81, Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden illness and passing of our mother Marilyn on June 1, 2024, with her loving family by her side.
Born in Eastern Passage, NS; she was the second daughter of the late Herbert and Hazel Brown (Cleary).
Marilyn always wanted a big family and she welcomed her first child Kathy in 1961. She loved being a mother.
In 1962, while living in Debert, Marilyn would meet her future husband Gene (Clarence). They would go on to marry in 1963 and have three more children. Karen, Kelly and Kevin.
Gene was a member of the Canadian Forces and their married life would see them travel across Canada to live in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia again and then Newfoundland when Gene finally retired from the CF. After several years in NL they would make their final move back to Nova Scotia, where they remained until passing. They celebrated 57 anniversaries.
Marilyn worked hard her entire life, finding work wherever her family was stationed. She was a wonderful mom, she cooked every day and was involved in sporting activities for herself and her children. She played broomball, softball, curled and golfed. She took up clogging and was a wonderfully talented painter, crocheter and tatter. We often joked that she was the energizer bunny and she kept it up until the end.
Marilyn was an exceptional singer but she was unaware of just how good she was. From an early age her dad would make her and her siblings sing while he played guitar and enrolled them in school concerts. In her senior years she discovered bluegrass gospel and that became her passion. This is where her love of music was born.
In the early 2000's Marilyn and Gene embarked on a two decade long adventure as snow birds; spending summers between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and winters fleeing to their second family in Zephyrhills, Florida where they made many friends and provided musical entertainment that is still talked about today. Marilyn had an extraordinary voice and Gene matched her talent on guitar and mandolin. There was not an instrument that he could not learn. They even achieved a world wide viral video via social media.
Marilyn developed some heart issues, ending their winters in Florida. The doctors were able to repair her heart valve and enabled them to get back to enjoying life. Bluegrass festivals, Bingo, family dinners and breakfasts, these were great times in her life.
Unfortunately Gene developed serious health issues in 2021 and passed away in September in Halifax. Marilyn was devastated and quite lost for a time having lost her dear best friend and husband. Marilyn's daughter Karen became very involved with Marilyn after this, helping to look after her needs and comforting her; this helped very much to fill the void she felt at the loss of Gene. Marilyn greatly loved and appreciated Karen for her efforts in helping her as did the family.
The next year Kathy also returned home to Dartmouth and provided companionship to Mom. This helped her become more outgoing again and led to her getting back to life with the support of her family and friends. She loved her family fiercely and defended and helped them at every turn. Humor and love was the flavor of her life and she enjoyed every minute she had.
In later years Marilyn spent a lot of time playing bingo with her friends and sister. She went to many dances with friends and family and became a part of the Dartmouth Seniors Centre community.
Marilyn was a family woman and a Christian. She loved her children and her siblings were equally as important.
Left with a lifetime of loving memories are children Kathy, Karen (Darell), Kevin (Vicky), and Kelly; grandchildren Sheldon, Jordan, Kelvin, Bradley and Amy as well as siblings Sheila, Linda (Phil), Dennis , Bobby (Ardeth), Paul (Pat) and Laurie (Cathy). She had many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Too many to name but she loved them all.
Mom, you will be dearly missed. We love and appreciate you for all of your sacrifices. Kathy, Karen, Kelly & Kevin XO
Marilyn's funeral will take place June 18th at 2:30 PM at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Eastern Passage, NS. She has been cremated so there will be no viewing. Family will proceed to burial and sandwiches will be offered in the Church after. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Lung Cancer Canada would be welcome and greatly appreciated.
Condolences
