I was very sad to hear of Dan's passing. I have known Dan since 1992 and worked with him twice during his military career on board the HMCS Protecteur and the Intelligence Branch. One fond memory of Dan I remember was while we were on the HMCS Protecteur during a NATO deployment, we had a port visit in Amsterdam. Dan wanted to spend our last day in Amsterdam to try and find his grandfathers grave at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery near the German Border. No one in his family had seen it and he couldn't let the opportunity pass him by. I was a bit hungover to be honest from the previous night but I had promised him I would go. Dan woke me up early eager to head out so we could catch the train. We arrived in Holten and had no clue where to go. This was way before the days of GPS and Google maps, so we followed the signs as best we could and got lost twice and took further directions from a nice woman and her grandmother after visiting 2 different cemeteries. We walked at least a kilometer down a dirt road and came to a crossroads with no clue where to head next. Time was quickly running out if we were to make it back in time to catch our train. Dan was visibly upset that we had come so far to no avail. He said out loud, "God give us a sign please.", and no sooner did he say that, we saw a small sign only about 1 foot in height that indicated the Holten War Cemetery was 1.5km away. We decided to run to save as much time as we could and arrived there finally. Dan was overjoyed. The cemetery was kept in immaculate condition by the Dutch caretakers and we were the only people there. Dan found his grandfathers grave took some photos and wiped some tears. It was a very emotional moment. I even found a distant relative myself. We doubled back and just made the last train with minutes to spare. It was by far one of the best times I had spent in the Netherlands taking that adventure with Dan. I have posted the pictures I have of Dan on that day in the photos. Rest in Peace Dan.
