Obituary For Glyn Charles Kent Hilchey
HILCHEY, Glyn Charles Kent, age 97, died peacefully on April 23, 2023 at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, where he resided for the past several years. Prior thereto, he and his wife Shirley, of over 75 years, had been proud, longtime residents of Dartmouth, having moved there in 1960 from Montreal and previously Halifax.
He was the son of the late Stanley and Loretta Hilchey who originally resided in Stanley’s ancestral family home in Popes Harbour, on the Eastern Shore of NS, before relocating to Halifax where Glyn was born, the youngest of three sons, with the two older brothers, Harry and Ray, predeceasing him. It was at that peaceful Popes Harbour location that Glyn and Shirley spent many summer days enjoying the property and welcoming visitors, both during and after his successful sales career in electrical equipment throughout NS.
Glyn was involved with a number of local organizations, some of which were Boy Scouts, Emmanuel Anglican Church, and the Grand lodge of Masons of NS where he served as Worshipful Master, Woodlawn Lodge # 131 in 1971, and later as a District Chaplain. Prior thereto, Glyn served his country in WWII as a wireless radio operator, proficient in Morse Code, on merchant marine vessels during both coastal and oversees wartime voyages.
Glyn enjoyed reading, playing bridge, curling, golfing, fishing, gardening, cooking, genealogy research, and doing maintenance and restoration work at Popes Harbour. He loved the peacefulness found in the country and the beauty of nature. His belief in the Golden Rule and in adding value to life through hard work and perseverance were instilled in his family. He would be proud to have these values recognized as part of his legacy.
Glyn is survived by his wife Shirley (Hubley) Hilchey, his son Bruce Hilchey (Lynn), all of Dartmouth, and his son Terry Hilchey (Margo) of Braeshore, Pictou County, along with his two grandchildren Jeffery Hilchey (Krista) and Catherine Fraser (Andrew) and 4 great grandchildren (Quentin, Spencer, Marnie and Frederick).
His family is eternally grateful to the loving and caring staff of Floor 4, Westwood, at Camp Hill which was his recent home for several years.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned at a future date, with internment in Mount Herman Cemetery, Dartmouth.
In memory of Glyn, please consider a Tree Certificate donation, details of which may be found under the "Plant Trees" section of this website.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 starting at 11:00 am at Christ Church, corner of Dundas and Octerloney Streets, in downtown Dartmouth.
