Obituary For Harold E. Thornham

Harold “Brud” E. Thornham

Age 96, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at home on May 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Faye “Darlin” (nee Radford), four children: Elizabeth (Earl), David (Bev), Daniel (Karen), and LynnAnne (Iain), nine grandchildren: Bryan (Saundra), Scott (Julia), Chris (Talia), Jon (Lindsay), Kenzie, Abbie, Morgan (Jonathan), Kylie, and Caelan, five great-grandchildren: Liam, Emerson, Ava, Kate, and Finn, and one sister, Peggy. He was predeceased by his parents (Harold and Alice), brother (Bob), seven sisters (Marguerite, Vannie, Hallie, Lonie, Audrey, Joan, Gwen), a son in infancy (Harold III), and granddaughter (Breagh).

To all that knew him, Harold was affectionately known as “Brud”, short for “Brudder”, a nickname that was thoughtfully coined by his sisters during their childhood.

Brud had a long and fulfilling career as a mechanical engineer, after earning his degree at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Technical College. Brud’s career took him around the globe, where he made numerous memories that he enjoyed sharing with his children and grandchildren.

Along with being a well-educated man, Brud was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed playing hockey, golf, and curling. He was a long-standing member of Brightwood Golf Club and Dartmouth Curling Club.

To know Brud was to love Brud. He was commonly described as a loving, patient, wise, witty, and gentle-man. It was hard not to love Brud when you met him, especially after receiving one of his memorable hugs. Brud was a man of great integrity, always striving to do what was right and set an example for those around him. He was completely devoted to his Darlin and family, always placing their love and happiness at the top of his list.

Above everything else, Brud cherished spending time with his family…he was the true epitome of a family man. Brud loved family get togethers and entertaining his grandchildren. He loved watching members of the family interact, laugh, and play. While he was a man of few words at times, he never failed to deliver one of his perfectly timed one-liners during get togethers. He will always be remembered as the “Grand Poopa”, the inventor of the ice cream game and bottle game, conductor of the slideshows, and the master at solving for “X”.

Brud lived a long and joyful life. While his family will miss him dearly, they are grateful that he had a peaceful passing in the comfort of his home, which was exactly what he wanted. Love you forever, 414.

I had the pleasure of meeting Brud and Faye when they became volunteers at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, along with their daughter, Liz and husband, Earl. Brud and Faye were a beautiful, loving couple. After ALL their years of marriage they still had that romantic glow and ALWAYS held hands wherever they went. Even while volunteering at Halifax Stanfield. They brought smiles to so many people as they watched the two of them walk down a hall hand-in-hand. I am sure Brud and Faye were oblivious to the joy it brought people to see that kind of love in action at that age. Brud was a quiet man....but powerful in his word. I am so glad to have known him. Deepest sympathies to Faye, Liz, Earl and families. Kelly Martin

Faye Liz and families sincere sympathy to all of you. Brud was one of a kind for sure. I remember him at Charlie's auctions holding His Darlings hand, enjoying their home packed lunch and chuckling at the auctioneers expressions. His visits to Dr Filliters office were always a joy with him being given a "prescription" for a hug!! When I think of Brud I smile and I hope with time you will too. Hugs Cathy and Deverne
