Obituary For Shirley Isabel Sweet
Shirley Isabel Sweet
April 20, 1937 – January 11, 2025
With profound sadness, we share the passing of Shirley Isabel Sweet (Stevenson) on January 11, 2025. Born on April 20, 1937, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shirley was a beacon of love, kindness, and strength.
Shirley's life was built on her incredible capacity to love and care for others. She carried those around her through life’s joys and challenges with unwavering compassion, always putting the needs of others—especially her beloved boys—ahead of her own. Her genuine warmth and selflessness touched countless lives, creating friendships that spanned decades and leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Shirley enjoyed basketball during her school years and later found camaraderie and joy in bowling. She was an active volunteer with the Kinsmen, giving her time and energy to support her community. Shirley worked hard throughout her life, whether it was at Lantic Sugar, Mitchell Fur, the Post Office, the Nova Scotia Liquor Store, or as a dedicated and respected real estate agent for nearly 20 years.
Shirley found her greatest joy in spending time with family and friends. She loved relaxing by the beach, hopping on the back of a snowmobile for winter adventures, or enjoying evenings filled with laughter, dinner, and games. These moments of togetherness brought her immense happiness and created cherished memories for all who shared them with her.
She is survived by her sons, Darin (Taura) and Derek (Jacqueline), and her cherished grandson, Avery, who brought her endless pride and joy. Shirley also leaves behind her siblings, Doug (Mildred), Bill (Jeanette, deceased), and Paula (John), as well as her brother-in-law, Gerald (Yvonne) Sweet and many nieces and nephews. She is reunited with her loving husband, Bernard (Bun); her brother, Milner (Carol); and many dear friends who predeceased her.
Shirley’s compassion, tenacity, and generous spirit will forever be a source of inspiration. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks for the kindness, love, and condolences received during this difficult time. A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place at The Saraguay House, 2308 Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax, on January 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission at https://soulsharbour.ca/.
As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing Shirley is reunited with her beloved Bun and all those she held dear. Her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched.
